"You're Fired in 6 Months" Question
Chief of Staff
What it tests
Self-awareness, intellectual honesty, realistic threat assessment
Format
- 1Ask: "Imagine we hire you today. Six months from now, you're fired. What went wrong?"
- 2Follow up: "Now imagine the opposite. Six months in, you've exceeded every expectation. What did you do differently?"
What to look for
- Authenticity: Do they give a real answer or a humble-brag? ("I worked too hard" is a fail)
- Self-awareness: Do they know their actual weaknesses?
- Specificity: detailed scenario > vague "communication issues"
- Upside vision: The second question reveals their ambition and strategic thinking
Adaptation guide
Works for any senior role, not just CoS. The inverse framing (fired vs. exceeded) gives you two data points from one question.
