Stripe Writing Assessment (Take-Home Memo)

Chief of Staff

What it tests

Analytical thinking + written communication — Stripe's #1 hiring signal

Format

  1. 1Provide a data table showing product/segment/market performance over 12 months
  2. 2Write a 1-2 page written memo (no slides): analyze patterns, identify biggest opportunity and risk, recommend 3 specific actions, identify what additional data is needed
  3. 3Time: 1-2 hours recommended

What to look for

  • Data interpretation (can they read a table and draw non-obvious insights?)
  • Writing quality (structure, clarity, concision)
  • Recommendation specificity (actionable vs. vague)
  • Intellectual humility (the "what data would you need" question tests this)

Full description

Format:

"Here is a data table showing [product/segment/market] performance over the last 12 months. In a 1-2 page written memo (no slides):

  1. Analyze the data — what patterns do you see?
  2. Identify the biggest opportunity and the biggest risk
  3. Recommend 3 specific actions the executive team should take
  4. What additional data would you want before making a final recommendation?

Time: 1-2 hours recommended"

Time: 1-2 hours (take-home)

What to look for:

  • Data interpretation (can they read a table and draw non-obvious insights?)
  • Writing quality (structure, clarity, concision)
  • Recommendation specificity (actionable vs. vague)
  • Intellectual humility (the "what data would you need" question tests this)

Why Stripe loves this: They're a writing-first culture (like Amazon's memo culture). If you can't write a clear 2-pager, you can't communicate with executives. This is their most predictive interview signal.
