What to look for

  • Pass: Absorbs feedback, adjusts immediately, asks clarifying questions, stays composed
  • Fail: Gets defensive, argues back, freezes, or becomes visibly shaken
  • Red flag: Agrees superficially but doesn't change behavior

Train interviewers to push back firmly but professionally. The goal is to simulate a tough customer, not to be cruel. Calibrate the intensity to your culture.

Format:

  1. Candidate prepares and delivers a mock demo of your product (or a product they know well)
  2. Mid-demo, an interviewer interrupts with deliberately harsh, direct feedback:
    • "This isn't working. You're losing me."
    • "A customer would have tuned out 3 minutes ago."
    • "You're not answering my actual question."
  3. Observe how the candidate reacts: do they get defensive, shut down, or adapt in real-time?

Time: 45 minutes (30-min demo + 15-min debrief)
