Internalization of brand voice, copy editing instincts, and ability to rewrite at scale without losing the original meaning

Format

  1. 1Candidate receives a brand voice guide and three pieces of existing content (product page, onboarding email, support doc) written in a flat, generic voice
  2. 2They rewrite all three to match the brand voice guide: same information, sharper tone
  3. 3They annotate one rewrite with inline comments explaining each change
  4. 4Bonus: they flag one sentence in the original they would push back on cutting — and explain why

What to look for

  • Do rewrites feel like the same brand or three different writers?
  • Are edits substantive (sentence rhythm, word choice, specificity) or cosmetic (swapped adjectives)?
  • Do annotations reveal a mental model for voice, or just aesthetic preference?
  • Is the pushback flag well-reasoned — do they protect meaning, or are they attached to their own phrasing?
